Background
Celestica are contract manufacturers, and Celestica is dedicated to delivering end-to-end product lifecycle solutions to drive customer success.
For many years Total Power Solutions has supplied and maintained the Schneider equipment at Celestica, so it was natural for the business to look to TPS when a significant UPS requirement arose.
The project involved maintaining power for some critical infrastructure – an entire Clean Room manufacturing facility. So, the solution simply couldn’t fail. There was a back-up generator at the facility, however if the electricity went down, it could take 15 or 20 seconds to kick in – too much time to maintain the integrity of the Clean Room environment. So, a UPS was needed to avoid any dips or surges in power, which can also have a negative impact on the longevity and performance of the equipment at the plant.
Because of the importance of the project, Gabriel considered TPS to be the go-to supplier in the circumstances. “They are the best in the business and that’s what you need for work like this.” He was impressed from the outset with the thorough and expert process applied to the project. “They came down and did the spec. and design for the product. One of the challenges we had was that this is an old facility and the space available was very limited. They were able to install a bespoke solution, after documenting a detailed spec. and using their own knowledge of the products on the market, and how they could be customised.”
TPS is certified by Schneider Electric as an EcoXpert Power Continuity Master and Critical IT Infrastructure Master and TPS is a certified Service Partner. The solution spec’d included the market leading, highly efficient Schneider Electric Galaxy VL 500kW UPS with an external battery to support 100% load (500kW) for 5 minutes. This required 3x strings of batteries to be installed in adjacent, matching battery cabinets.
Comprehensive and Expert Service
Gabriel believes that the comprehensive service delivered was expert at every level. It encompassed the initial specification, the delivery logistics, the electrical installation, commissioning the UPS, hand-over training and ongoing maintenance.
When the equipment was delivered, he was intrigued with the level of care taken even at a logistical level. “There was no way that kit was going to be damaged on arrival, when you looked at the packaging. There was even a kind of ramp that was integrated into the box it came in, to get it out safely.”
Tim Kelly Electrical completed the electrical installation and TPS completed the battery installation and cabling. TPS also supported the commissioning of the unit and the final hand-over to the client.
Gabriel said the hand-over process was very helpful “Celestica was given instructions on the day-to-day maintenance of the UPS and what to check weekly.
At the end of the project, we were confident that we got the ideal solution and every single person we dealt with was competent. And, of course we have a lot of re-assurance knowing that TPS are maintaining the system.”
Looking to the future
Gabriel concludes “This project was more significant than our previous work with TPS and from my perspective it just re-enforced that fact that they are the best in the business. I can’t see why we would look elsewhere for UPS support, so we look forward to continuing our partnership with them long into the future”.
